Bail is set at $25,000 for a man who allegedly had 538 suspected fentanyl pills in his possession when a Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputy contacted him on westbound U.S. Highway 12 in Lewis County on Sunday.

Two deputies reportedly arrested the defendant, identified as Jody Lee Roberts, 46, of Puyallup, following an interaction on Sept. 29.

The deputies reportedly stopped to talk to Roberts and a second male subject after they saw the subjects standing behind their vehicle, which was pulled off to the side of the road with its hazard lights on.

A deputy reportedly asked the men if they needed assistance, and they informed the deputy they were having some issues with their right rear tire. The deputy reportedly asked to see their identification, advising them “they were not in trouble and that he was just trying to figure out who he was talking to,” according to court documents.

During the interaction, a deputy reportedly saw a glass smoking device in the vehicle’s center console. When questioned about the pipe, Roberts “denied any knowledge,” then allegedly “admitted the pipe was his” and “stated he is a drug user and is addicted to fentanyl and methamphetamine.”

A deputy reportedly saw a camouflage bag in the backseat and asked Roberts what was inside. Roberts allegedly “advised he did not have any idea,” but “insisted that (the deputy) could grab the bag.”

Inside the bag, deputies reportedly found several baggies containing blue pills that the deputies suspected was fentanyl. Deputies also located $700 in $100 bills, a scale, gloves and a “rock” containing 538 suspected fentanyl pills.

Roberts was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail at 9:45 p.m. on Sept. 29, according to jail records.

He was charged Monday, Sept. 30 in Lewis County Superior Court with one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture or deliver.

Arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3.
