A 22-year-old man was repeatedly stabbed in his hand early Tuesday morning on the city's west side, according to Olympia police.

The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault.

About 2:15 a.m., police were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Fern Street Southwest after receiving 911 calls about fighting and screaming.

Police arrived at the apartment and found a woman and two men, one of whom was "bleeding profusely from his hand," Olympia police Lt. Paul Lower said.

Police later learned the two men had begun arguing and it escalated into a fight. The suspect, also 22, grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim, threatening to kill him, Lower said.

Police think the victim had raised his hands in a defensive posture when he was stabbed, Lower said.

The victim was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The suspect, who also suffered an injury, was treated at MultiCare Capital Medical Center, Lower said.

Once the suspect was cleared by the hospital, he was arrested.

Lower said the woman helped with the investigation.
