The Mariners had three players nominated for the 2025 Silver Slugger Awards and seemed to have two sure winners.
Instead, only catcher Cal Raleigh took home the award for top hitter at his position in the American League. Neither Julio Rodríguez nor Jorge Polanco, who were finalists at their respective positions, were given the award.
The Mariners were also a finalist for the team Silver Slugger award.
Raleigh had a record-setting season, posting a .247/.359/.589 slash line in 705 plate appearances while leading MLB in homers (60) and the American League in RBI (125). He surpassed Salvador Perez’s record for most homers in a season by a catcher (48) as well as Mickey Mantle’s record of most homers in a season by a switch-hitter (54).
Raleigh finished with 20-plus homers from each side of the plate, which no switch-hitter had done in MLB history. He had 11 games where he hit multiple homers, which tied an MLB record shared by Hank Greenberg of the Tigers (1938), Sammy Sosa of the Cubs (1993) and Aaron Judge of the Yankees (2022).
It's his first Silver Slugger award; though, many people in baseball feel he should have won the award last season as well.
Rodríguez seemed to be a lock to garner one of the three Silver Sluggers given to American League outfielders. Instead, the three Silver Slugger awards for the outfield went to Judge of the Yankees, Riley Greene of the Tigers and Byron Buxton of the Twins.
Judge was a lock to win the award. He posted a .331/.457/.688 slash line with 30 doubles, two triples, 53 homers, 114 RBI, 137 runs scored, 113 walks and 124 strikeouts. It was the fifth time he has earned the award.
Both Buxton and Greene are first-time Silver Sluggers.
Buxton played in 136 games, posting a .264/.327/.551 slash line with 21 doubles, seven triples, 35 homers, 83 RBI, 97 runs scored, 41 walks and 148 strikeouts.
Greene played in 157 games, posting a .258/.313/.493 slash line with 31 doubles, a triple, 36 homers, 111 RBI, 84 runs scored, 46 walks and 201 strikeouts.
With a strong second half, Rodríguez put together one of his best seasons in his young career. He led the AL with 710 plate appearances, playing in 160 games (159 in center field), posting a .267/.324/.474 slash line with 174 hits, 31 doubles, four triples, 32 homers, 95 RBI, 30 stolen bases and 106 runs scored.
Among AL center fielders, he ranked first in batting average, hits, runs scored and stolen bases while ranking second in doubles, triples and RBI. He is the first player in Mariners history to have multiple 30-plus homer/30-plus steal seasons.
Jazz Chisholm of the Yankees was named the Silver Slugger award winner for second base over Polanco and Brandon Lowe. In 130 games, he posted a .242/.332/.481 slash line with 15 doubles, 31 homers, 80 RB1, 31 stolen bases, 58 walks and 148 strikeouts.
Polanco played in 138 games despite battling an oblique issue early in the season that limited his availability. He posted a .265/.326/.495 slash line with 30 doubles, 26 homers, 64 runs scored and 78 RBI in 471 plate appearances.
The Yankees won the team Silver Slugger award. They led MLB in runs per game (5.24), homers (274) and on-base-plus-slugging percentage (.787) while posting a team slash line of .251/.332/.455.
As a team, the Mariners posted a .244/.320/.420 slash line while scoring 766 runs with 236 homers, 734 RBI and 544 walks. Seattle ranked second in the AL in homers, walks and stolen bases and fourth in runs scored and on-base percentage.
