As Mat Classic XXXIII wrapped up Saturday at the Tacoma Dome, the top local boys finishers ended up being Adna’s Tristan Ridley and Black Hills’ Mikey Johnston, who each placed second.
Ridley finished second at 1B/2B 152 pounds after starting off the tourney with back-to-back wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. He fell in the title match in a 2-0 decision to Granger’s Cody Northwind.
Johnston won three-straight matches to reach the 2A 113-pound championship match, where he fell in an 8-0 major decision to Orting’s Quentin Harding.
W.F. West boys were the top team finishers, taking fourth in Class 2A with 10 wrestlers placing top-8 and finishing with 127 team points. Orting won the team title with 208.5 points.
“It was a good weekend,” W.F. West coach Jamie Rakevich said. “The boys showed up and wrestled really tough. Wasn’t sure where we were gonna be before the season started, we kind of went in blind and the kids showed up
Bearcat wrestlers who placed were Blake Ely, who was sixth at 145 pounds. Bo Davis was third at 132, Kayden Ryan was eighth at 120, Ty Foister placed eighth at 145, Henry Jordan was sixth at 152, Tucker Land was fifth at 160, Hayden Sciera was sixth at 160, Brock Guyette placed fourth at 182, Andrew Penland was seventh at 220 and Daniel Matagi finished third at 285.
This year’s seniors who competed at state — Ryan, Jordan, Davis, Guyette and Foister — ended their final high school season with three top-10 finishes and two top-5 finishes. They never lost a league match or regional tournament.
What Rakevich said he’ll remember most about this team is their resilience to keep pushing, even when the season was in doubt with the pandemic going on.
“These kids, and all the seniors, stuck through it,” Rakevich said. “They grew up a lot in the past three months. Really proud of the kids. They rolled with it and made the best of it.”
Centralia sophomore Antonio Campos placed third after suffering the first loss of his high school career in the semifinals. Mossyrock’s Marshall Brockway also placed third in the 1B/2B 220-pound division. Toledo’s Damion Soto finished third at 170 pounds in 1B/2B.
The top girl finishers were both from Centralia, with Analeese McAllister taking fifth at 135 pounds and Jade Hudson taking seventh at 105 pounds to round out local podium finishers.
