The McEwan Fire north of Shelton, which started July 4, is 85% contained, fire officials said in an update on Tuesday.

All areas of evacuation are at Level 1, which means to be on alert for a possible evacuation. Area roads have reopened, including McEwan Prairie Road, according to the Western Washington Type 3 Incident Management team.

That team is turning over command of the fire to the state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday.

"The DNR team will continue working the fire, strengthening, and monitoring the control lines as well as mitigating the hot areas within the fire," a news release reads. "This process will continue until crews are sure the fire area is completely cooled with no interior burning."

Although roads have reopened, drivers are asked to be cautious on McEwan Prairie Road because fire crews are continuing to use it for fire access.
