Mickelson’s brace leads Tenino over Eatonville

A pair of goals from Callie Mickelson and a stifling defensive effort from Tenino was more than enough for the Beavers on Tuesday, when they defeated Eatonville 2-0 on the black turf.

“Eatonville is one of those teams we’ve played a ton over the years,” Tenino co-head coach Trevor Fetbrandt said. “We felt like we had a really good feel.”

Fetbrandt described the first half as a “dogfight,” but noted that the Beavers were able to generate nearly every scoring chance. Mickelson’s first goal came in the 12th minute, and in the 62nd, she added her second. Kyla Watson assisted both goals.

Tenino had more chances, finishing with 12 shots, but the 2-0 scoreline held until the final whistle.

Defensively, the Beavers were even more impressive. They allowed just one shot on goal and one corner kick throughout the entire game.

“We stymied them,” Fetbrandt said. “We kept the pressure the whole 80 … The structure defensively is so clear to see. It has freed us up to push an extra player or two forward. We get to play at our tempo.”

Both Fetbrandt and co-head coach Dave Montgomery commended Tamara Snodderly, who saved the lone shot she faced in net while filling in as the team’s emergency keeper.

The Beavers have now won three straight to start the season, and they’ll look to make it four at home against Overlake on Thursday.

“The girls are starting to feel confident,” Montgomery said. “They’re not getting big heads. You can tell when they see everything is going well and when we’re controlling the ball. We’re playing a fun brand of soccer. We know it is still early, and we have a long ways to go.”
