Missing person found dead in Thurston County home after SWAT team incident led to arrest

A missing person was found dead in their Thurston County home Thursday after police encountered an “uncooperative resident” in the missing person’s home. That led to a SWAT team assist and arrest for assault and firearm possession, according to a news release from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a report of a missing person on Tierney Street Southwest in the Maytown area Thursday morning. The person had not been seen for several days.

During the investigation, police encountered an “uncooperative resident” at the missing person’s home, who refused to allow deputies to enter. At the time police had no legal justification for a forcible entry, but later in the day patrol deputies were dispatched to a disturbance involving a firearm at the same home.

Probable cause was developed to arrest the resident on second-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm charges, and “due to the violent nature of the situation, the SWAT team was called in to assist,” according to TCSO. The person ultimately surrendered without incident after crisis negotiators made contact with them.

During a search of the home afterwards, the missing person was found dead, police said.

As of Friday the cause of death was unknown and further details will be provided by the Thurston County Coroner’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Currently no one is in custody in connection with the death. Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact detectives at detectives@co.thurston.wa.us or call dispatch at 360-704-2740.

Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Brooks told The Olympian on Saturday the department had nothing further to share and won’t share more information until after the autopsy next week. He said the deceased person was a resident of the house, but did not answer questions about the identity of the missing person or the person who was arrested.
