Mississippi robbery suspect nabbed after getting stuck in Oregon swamp

A man fleeing from Washington County sheriff’s deputies ran into a Beaverton marsh early Saturday morning where authorities say he became bogged down in mud and high water, then surrendered.

At about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office said, deputies sought to pull over a 2017 Audi Q7 for an unspecified traffic violation while it was driving in a neighborhood just north of Nike’s campus.

The driver didn’t stop, according to the sheriff’s office, and eventually fled from the Audi on foot. Deputies said they saw the man carrying a gun while he ran away.

The driver ultimately gave up in the marsh, and deputies found him carrying “a large sum of money.” The sheriff’s office declined to say how much he carried but released a photo showing ten stacks of currency, each stack topped by a $100 bill.

Investigators identified the man as 31-year-old Lamarcus Thomas and said they learned he had an outstanding warrant for armed robbery in Mississippi.

Deputies didn’t find a weapon on Thomas but said a police dog, Blitz, located a gun after searching the area. The sheriff’s office said the gun had a 30-round magazine.

Authorities took Thomas to the Washington County Jail, where he faced several charges related to Saturday morning’s episode. Those charges include driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, attempting to elude a police officer and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
