As the first NFL Monday Night Football game was being played in Chicago, the Morton-White Pass football team got its own version of a primetime opener, as the Timberwolves dominated Highland 53-7 in Cowiche on Monday.
The matchup was originally set for Saturday, but due to poor air quality in the area, the game was pushed back two days.
The delay didn’t bother the Timberwolves, who racked up 427 yards and scored seven touchdowns on the ground.
Kohen Ingalsbe kicked things off early, opening the scoring with a 52-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He went on to finish the night with 222 yards on just 12 attempts (18.5 yards per carry), and he scored two more touchdowns to finish the day with three.
“You know what you’re gonna get with Kohen,” MWP coach Lee Metcalf said. “He’s gonna run hard, and he’s gonna play hard. I thought he gave us everything he had.”
Freshman Liam Pelletier also impressed, rushing for 145 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries.
“It’s gonna be a lot of fun to watch him going forward,” Metcalf said. “We got a lot to look forward to with him.”
Logan Mays also shined with limited touches, tallying 61 yards and a pair of touchdowns on five catches.
The Timberwolves shut down the Highland passing attack outside of one 65-yard touchdown, but on the 14 other Highland attempts, they gave up just five completions and 36 yards.
Metcalf specifically gave props to Brayden Fleetwood, who excelled at linebacker after earning an all-league spot on the line last fall.
“Asking him to pick up a new position was a lot,” Metcalf said. “But he stepped up really well. He was a bright spot for us.”
Like the NFL teams that play on Mondays, MWP is now faced with a short week. Though instead of waiting until Sunday, the T-Wolves will have to be ready to face White Swan on Friday with just three days rest.
White Swan will also be on short rest, as the Cougars also played on Monday due to air quality east of the mountains.
“It’s gonna be an interesting week,” Metcalf said.
