The Morton-White Pass Timberwolves will soon be no more.
In a January meeting, the Morton school board voted to dissolve their athletic cooperative with White Pass, according to Morton School District Superintendent John Hannah.
The decision was made after a predetermined November deadline according to the interlocal agreement, meaning that the two schools will continue to operate together for the next two school years, 2024-25 and 2025-26.
Hannah told The Chronicle that the process of reevaluating their cooperative began when a group of parents requested an evaluation at a board meeting in November.
Over the next two months, the school board solicited input from students, staff, administration, coaches, and community members, and the majority of each group recommended dissolution.
Those findings were summarized in a report to the board before a formal notification was sent to White Pass.
Also discussed in the evaluation are factors that will have to be discussed before the start of the 2026-27 school year, including expenses, equipment, and signage around both schools.
While together, Morton-White Pass has been competing in the C2BL, but both schools will be responsible for finding a new league in 1B if each schools’ student count is below the 2B threshold of 105 students.
Morton and White Pass first formed a co-op for football in 2009, and that was soon followed by baseball and softball in 2010. The following school year, 2010-11, the two schools combined for every sport.
As a cooperative, the Timberwolves have had their fair share of success.
Most notably, the T-Wolves won back-to-back boys basketball state championships in 2014 and 2015, and the football team made the state championship game three years in a row from 2012-14, according to the WIAA website.
Additionally, the girls basketball team made the state tournament in 2013 and 2014, and softball finished fourth in state in 2015. The volleyball team has also qualified for state three times, including a sixth-place finish in 2014.
