Mountaineers, Riverhawks show out in league meet

Powered by double digit event victories and several top-five finishes, the Rainier girls and Toledo boys track and field teams picked up team victories at a league meet held at Rainier High School on Thursday night.

The Mountaineers piled up 194.5 points to cruise to the win. Napavine was fourth with 66 points while Rochester rounded out the top-five with 61.5 points. Toledo recorded 36 points to place in a tie for seventh.

In four events, Rainier had a 1-2 finish and one personal record by Katelyn Eckroth in the javelin with a toss of 99 feet, 3 inches. Jazzlyn Shumate, Madison Ingram, Acacia Murphy and Anika Plowman teamed to win the 1,600-meter relay in 4:32.47.

Shumate won the 400, Ingram nabbed the 1,600 while Murphy claimed the high jump and Plowman took the long jump. Janess Blackburn swept the shot put and discus plus Ella Marvin cruised in the pole vault. Rayanna Wisner (800) and Kinsley Barlow (3,200) also picked up wins for Rainier.

Napavine’s 800 relay plus Jessie McCoy (shot put) and Haley Gallagher (pole vault) registered second place performances. Toledo sophomore Onica Chase placed fourth in the open 200 and 400 then anchored its 800 relay to third.



On the boys side, Toledo clipped Rochester 115-102 for the team win while Rainier edged by Napavine 98.5-97.5 for third. The Riverhawks saw their collection of athletes come away with 12 events with at least one top-five finisher.

Trevin Gale secured the 200 and 400-meter dash wins while Treyton Marty won the 3,200 and Cooper Fallon triumphed in the discus for the Riverhawks.

Rochester sprinter Dominic Delgado beat a stacked field in the open 100 and ran a leg on its winning 400 relay. Distance star Gunnar Morgan edged Marty by .32 seconds to win the 1,600 and Stanton Smith uncorked a new personal record toss of 39-02.25 to snare the shot put.

Napavine’s Austin Lyons picked up three wins in sweeping the hurdles and leaping 39-07 to take first in the triple jump. Rainier’s Zander Peck heaved the javelin 169-10 for a new lifetime best while Ean Viik crossed the line first in the 800.
