Mountaineers shut out Vikings for second straight win

That 0-4 start for the Rainier High School football team is a thing of the past and Friday’s 20-0 triumph over Mossyrock secured a crossover berth in the C2BL East.

“It was a great team effort,” Mountaineers head coach Andy Bartell said

Rainier (3-5, 2-3) was down five starters and was nearing a scoreless game heading into the locker room, until freshman Wyatt Cughan was in the end zone on a scoop-and-score just seconds left in the second quarter. It scored on its first drive in the second half, recovered an onside kick and took control of the game.

The Vikings (1-6, 0-4) had five total fumbles and lost four of them. They can still claim the fifth and final crossover berth in the division if they beat rival Morton-White Pass on Thursday. Kyle Brockway had 68 yards on seven carries.

And after having to forfeit last week, head coach Robbie Dailey is wanting to give his seniors one final game at minimum.

“We talk about having a 1-0 mentality,” he said. “We could have come out and rolled over, but we didn’t.”
