Mountaineers top Loggers to split season series

The Rainier boys basketball team earned its third win in four games on Thursday, defeating Onalaska 61-38.

The Mountaineers controlled the game from start to finish, taking a six-point lead in the first and building on it throughout the rest of the game.

“Tonight we demonstrated a willingness to do the little things that it takes to win,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “We continue to talk about three things: Compete, defend, and share the ball. This evening we did each of those things well and feel a sense of pride in how we celebrated one another and played team basketball.”

Peyton Sheaffer led Rainier with 15 points, while Jimmy Meldrum scored 13 and Hunter Howell scored 10. Nehemiah Linson added nine points, Jake Meldrum tallied seven, and Riley Lynch and Jordan Pringle combined for seven more.

Blaze Underhill led the Loggers with 12 points, while Justin Jacoby scored five. Ethan Thayer, Case McGraw, Maddox McKinley, and Nick Rushton each added four, while Noland Brady tallied three.

“I gotta do a better job of getting the guys mentally prepared,” Onalaska coach Fred Sturza said. “We just came out flat again … As a first year coach, I have to get dialed in so that the guys can play faster.”

With a win, Onalaska would have swept Rainier and jumped up to fourth in the C2BL standings, but now the Loggers sit one game behind the Mountaineers and the two teams have split their two regular season matchups.

“We just gotta control our own destiny right now,” Sturza said. “If we want a high seed, we gotta control our own and get some wins.”

Onalaska (5-7, 4-5 C2BL) will head to Raymond to face Raymond-South Bend on Saturday, while Rainier (8-4, 5-4 C2BL) will head to Mossyrock on Tuesday.
