The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will again test the country’s Emergency Alert System next week. Residents should not call 911 unless there’s an emergency during the test.

The test is scheduled for 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4. During the test, a text message in either Spanish or English will be sent to consumer cellphones. According to a release from the Lewis County Department of Emergency Management, the message will read, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

The country’s emergency broadcast systems will also be tested, including radio and television broadcasts, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers. The broadcast test will last approximately one minute.

The broadcast message will state, “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 11:20 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. PST. This is only a test. No action is required by the public.”

The test could be delayed to Oct. 11 if an emergency event occurs.
