For the third year in a row, Nature Nurture Farmacy in Chehalis will practice what they preach by creating community with the building blocks of fresh local food and inspired local chefs.
Nature Nurture Farmacy’s Enchanted Herbal Evening event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the City Farm Chehalis event venue located on 456 N. Market Blvd. in downtown Chehalis. The funds generated by the event will go to support the business as it continues to offer low cost alternative health care to the community.
Nature Nurture Farmacy offers care and services to those with lower incomes on a sliding scale. In an effort to maintain this practice so that all people in the community can receive the attention they deserve, Nature Nurture Farmacy will take the revenue from the event and use it to continue funding their nonprofit.
“The event just keeps getting bigger and better,” Outreach Manager Farley Walker said. “It’s a great opportunity for those who attend to see what you can do with the bounty that is all around us.”
The event will feature farm fresh produce from local growers that will be transformed into a meal by local chefs. During its regular business hours, the Farmacy offers access to alternative medicine and care, including naturopathic doctors, massage therapists and an apothecary. One of their big focuses is the project “Food is Medicine.”
“When you go to a traditional doctor, they might just look at one symptom that you bring up,” Walker said. “But a naturopathic doctor looks at the whole picture of a patient's health and food is such an important part. When you eat local it’s benefiting your mental and physical health while also feeding and building community.”
By including local farms such as Simpler Past Homestead and Minus Tide Shellfish, Nature Nurture Farmacy is staying true to their project and showing attendees how community is built through relationships with the people who grow our food and how that exchange does much more than just benefit our physical health.
The Farmacy’s “dream team” of chefs is headed by Shona Smith of Shona’s Food Company and her assistant chef Michelle Peterson. As Smith is very busy running her cafe daily, she enlisted the help of a few other local chefs to take on the Enchanted Herbal Evening’s catering needs.
Jack McHale, of Minus Tide Shellfish, and Derek and June Noble, of A Simpler Past Homestead, will be providing dishes for the event as well. According to Smith, the menu will include a buffet of seasonal, fresh and local food. Each chef will be in charge of their section of the menu including protein and sides from each.
Smith said, “When creating the menu, physically having the ingredients fuels inspiration for dishes.”
Vegan, gluten free and vegetarian options created with farm fresh ingredients will be available with the goal of elevating the community’s products.
Along with the local food that will be provided, there will also be a flower crown making station, live music, a dessert dash, a silent auction, a raffle and possibly a tarot card reader. The Farmacy encourages people to dress up, but if they need a little whimsy, a flower crown table is waiting for attendees
