The Centralia Police Department (CPD) and the Centralia School District (CSD) on Friday issued a joint statement to update the community regarding Oct. 30’s Centralia High School varsity football game against Hoquiam at Tiger Stadium.
The statement came after a threat the previous week resulted in the arrest of a juvenile and the delay of Centralia’s game at Rochester from Friday to the following Monday.
The Friday Oct. 30 game was played without any issues, but there was an increased law enforcement presence.
“Following the threat of violence that led to the cancellation of last week’s game, we have been made aware of recent conversations circulating regarding potential violence between students at tonight’s game. CPD detectives have investigated these reports and, at this time, have been unable to verify their substance or credibility,” the Centralia organizations said in the release. “The safety and wellbeing of our community, especially our students, is a priority. CPD and CSD have been actively working together to monitor the situation to ensure a safe environment for everyone in attendance. Out of a commitment to transparency, both agencies believe the best course of action is to keep the public informed of these unverified rumors while maintaining our scheduled activities.
“Unconfirmed whispers and rumors rob our students, student-athletes, coaches, and staff of the opportunities that bring us together as a community. Friday night football is a time to showcase our schools’ hard work, dedication, and spirit. CPD and CSD stand united in our support for our students, and we encourage the Centralia community to show up, fill the stands, and loudly support them at tonight’s game”
Law enforcement and school district staff had an increased, highly visible presence at the stadium to increase community peace of mind. The additional personnel were stationed throughout the venue to answer questions or concerns, provide assistance and help everyone feel safe.
The CPD and CSD ask the community to stay watchful and continue reporting any safety concerns to school administrators or the Centralia Police Department at 360-740-1105.
