A nearly 2-acre brush fire burned Tuesday evening and reignited early Wednesday morning after the initial containment line was breached, according to a Riverside Fire Authority news release. No structures are threatened and no injuries have been reported.
The Riverside Fire Authority was dispatched to a report of a possible brush fire with multiple reports of smoke visible in the area after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. Units arrived at the end of Hobson Road and found a nearly two-acre brush fire in heavy timber.
West Thurston Regional Fire Authority also received reports of a brush fire and was actively engaged in firefighting at that location.
The Washington state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) arrived on scene and took over the fire, releasing both West Thurston Fire Authority and Riverside Fire Authority after 11 p.m. At about 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, the initial containment line was breached and resulted in additional fire involvement. As of Wednesday afternoon, the fire is currently five to 10 acres in size with DNR helicopters, one dozer and hand crew operations on site. DNR will continue to work on containment with local and other resources as needed.
Riverside Fire Authority asks the public to avoid flying drones near wildfires to prevent interference with air firefighting operations. Drones pose a significant danger and can ground air operations. The agency noted that residents will continue to see smoke in this area and weather conditions may provide some relief as temperatures drop.
