The Northwest Wind Symphony kicks off its 2024-25 concert season with a fall concert at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the Corbet Theatre at Centralia College.

Titled a “Potpourri of Masterpieces,” the evening’s program includes:

• The sax quartet “Snapshots” (IV. To Pull Out All the Stops) by Franklin D. Hansen

• Percy Grainger’s “Hill-Song No. 2,” which organizers said “will transport you to wind-swept Scottish moors with wild patches of heath and peat bogs.”

• Frank Ticheli’s “Over the Moon,” which organizers said “takes you on a musical journey over the moon and back to Earth again.”

• “Five To Go” by Jack Bullock, which organizers said is reminiscent of the big band era of American music.

“Barnum & Bailey’s Favorite,” written by Karl King. The piece is “often considered the grand-daddy of circus marche (and) celebrates ‘The Greatest Show on Earth,’” organizers wrote.

“Polka and Fugue” from the opera “Schwanda, the Bagpiper” by Jaromir Weinberger. The opera is based off of a Czech folk tale wherein a master bagpiper melts the ice queen’s heart with his playing.

• “Irish Tune from County Derry,” by Percy Grainger. The piece is among the composer’s most popular and most recognizable.

• “Shepherd’s Hey,” also by Percy Grainger, which organizers called “a brisk and technically demanding dance.”

• Richard Rodgers “Sound of Music,” which will include a number of tunes audiences will likely know the melodies and words to.

General admission is $12 at the door. Students may enter for free with a paying adult.

The Northwest Wind Symphony was founded in 1991 by former W.F. West High School band director Dan Judd and former Centralia College Music Department faculty member Dr. Carolyn Vian.

Concerts are held at Corbet Theatre on the Centralia College campus three times yearly, typically in mid-October, late January and April.  For more information, visit www.northwestwindsymphony.org
