The Oakville School District Board of Directors voted 3-0 to censure one of its members for “conduct inconsistent with the expectations and responsibilities of their elected office” during a school board meeting Monday, Aug. 25.
Elizabeth Brockman was the subject of the motion. She did not receive a vote. Board Chair Katie Bushnell abstained from voting after raising the motion.
The other members, Jessica George, Chrisma Juarez and Sabra Noyes, all voted yes to censure Brockman.
The censure, known officially as Resolution 2024-25.8, does not impose disciplinary consequences, but rather indicates “the collective judgment of the Board” and “carries significance regarding public trust and internal governance.”
The resolution, signed by Bushnell and Superintendent Rich Staley, said that Brockman “repeatedly demonstrates a pattern of behavior characterized by a lack of civility when interacting with fellow board members and Superintendent Rich Staley in direct violation of Board Policy.”
The resolution further stated that “Director Brockman has willfully disregarded the Board's formally adopted Board Norms and Policies, and rejected the Board's requests to mediate and resolve conflict, thereby undermining trust, collaboration, and the orderly function of the Board.”
A brief statement posted by the board to the district’s website read, “We are disappointed to be in the situation where this was necessary, but the board felt taking this step was necessary.”
According to the statement, any questions should be directed to either Staley or Bushnell.
Brockman has deep ties to Oakville. According to the district’s website, the board member and her family have lived in the community for at least 12 years, with extended family going back 30 years.
“I have been involved in Education in a variety of ways over the past 30 plus years, from volunteering and teaching in a private school, to homeschooling, advocacy, etc.,” Brockman wrote in her biography on the district’s website.
“I am honored to be able to serve this school, the students, the parents and the community and look forward to making positive contributions to the Oakville School District.”
