Two Oakville High School students were involved in what the Oakville School District called a “physical altercation” during an April 25 assembly in the bleachers behind where elementary students were seated.
Staff responded immediately to ensure the safety of all students and to de-escalate the situation, according to an email from Superintendent Rich Staley to families. Staley wrote that “some other bystander students” who were caught in the incident were injured, but no elementary or middle school children were injured. It is not clear whether the two high school students were injured.
Students who wanted to leave the gym were taken to other spaces where they could talk through what they saw with a trusted adult, Staley said.
“The district and school administration are actively addressing this unfortunate situation in accordance with our student conduct policies and disciplinary procedures,” he wrote. “Additionally, we are providing support to the students involved and any others who may have been affected. We take our students’ safety very seriously and we followed building and district procedures to de-escalate this situation.”
