ODOT sweeps thousands of pumpkin seeds off the highway

For the Oregon Department of Transportation, the tricks came early in the form of thousands of pepitas all over the road.

ODOT employees spent Tuesday morning cleaning up a 200-foot stretch of road that was littered with pumpkin seeds. A tweet from the transportation department showed workers sweeping a mess of seeds on the asphalt of U.S. 20 just east of Corvallis.

ODOT did not immediately respond to an inquiry about where the seeds had come from or the startling lack of pumpkin fruit.

While seasonal squash seeds are not the normal hazard ODOT is working hard to keep from impacting Oregon drivers, they rose to the challenge.

And if you see a patch of pumpkins growing on the side of U.S. 20 next year, know it’s because ODOT kept the roads clear.
