A huge fourth quarter propelled the Onalaska football team over some of our neighbors to the north, as the Loggers defeated St. Thomas More out of Burnaby, British Columbia 46-14 in their season opener on Friday.
“It was a good game,” Onalaska coach Mazen Saade said after the game. “We were impressed with how our kids responded to adversity throughout the game.”
The Loggers jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the break, and they extended the lead to 22-0 before the Knights got on the board in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Onalaska erased any doubt, scoring 24 points to break the game open and cruise to victory.
Rodrigo Rodrgiuez led the way on the ground for the Loggers, rushing for 231 yards and a touchdown. Kayden Mozingo had himself a day as well, rushing for 159 yards and three touchdowns. As a team, the Loggers rushed for 472 yards and tallied 581 total yards of offense.
“It was a good first game,” Saade said. “I’m proud of them, but it’s the first game of the year. We got this out of the way, and then we’ll go back to work.”
Due to forfeitures over the last two seasons, this was the first time the Loggers had played a full game in week one since the spring COVID season.
“Just to be able to play Week 1, and play a full game was awesome,” Saade said. “It was great for our kids, it was great for our fans, and it was great for our community.
Next Friday, the Loggers will welcome the Napavine Tigers, the defending 2B state champions.
