ONALASKA — Freshman Nick Rushton knocked down a thrilling buzzer-beater 3-pointer to give Onalaska a 56-54 victory over Winlock in the Loggers’ home opener Thursday night.

“Our guys are excited,” Onalaska coach Wayne Nelson said. “Our guys played really hard. It was a good win at home.”

The Loggers hit 10 of 29 from long range, with freshman Blaze Underhill leading the way with a team-high 16 points. Senior Mazon Ulery added 15 points, Kole Taylor had 12 and Rushton finished with nine.

The Loggers overcame a poor rebounding and shooting night, getting outrebounded 35-20 by the Cardinals and shooting just 19 of 54 from the field (35%).

Winlock shot 52% (24 of 46) but couldn’t knock down timely shots, even with senior Nolan Swofford going for a game-high 28 points and seven rebounds.

Chase Schofield added nine points for the Cards and Payton Sickles had seven.

Winlock (0-5) hosts Toutle Lake on Tuesday. Onalaska (1-1) hosts Rainier at 7 p.m. Saturday.
