A car in Spanaway went airborne and struck the corner roof of a home early Thursday morning, leaving the driver dead and a passenger in critical condition, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department reported.

A 911 call was made at 2:21 a.m. reporting that a car had struck a residential home on the 4600 block of 225th Street Court East. Firefighter and sheriff's deputies arrived at 2:29 a.m.

The vehicle was driving south on 46th Avenue East. At one point, it left the roadway, hit a ditch and went airborne. It hit a tree then smashed the corner roof of the home and came to rest in the yard. Nobody inside the property was injured, according to sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss Jr.

The driver, an 18-year-old woman, was declared dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt, Moss said. The passenger, a 22-year-old man, was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a medical facility. He was wearing a seat belt.

It is unknown at this time how fast the vehicle was moving or if the driver was impaired, Moss said. More details will come out following the driver's autopsy and once the passenger can talk to authorities, Moss told The News Tribune.

The Sheriff's Department Traffic Division is investigating the incident.
