Oregon 18-year-old drowns in Siletz River Gorge, officials say

A Newport swimmer drowned Saturday in a remote area of the Siletz River Gorge in Logsden, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to a Sunday news release from the sheriff’s office, bystanders saw Dallas Davis, 18, leap from the rocks and have trouble returning from the river Saturday evening some 2 miles upstream from Moonshine Park.

Around 7 p.m., after Davis had been missing for about an hour, emergency workers spotted him in 10-12 feet of water just downstream from where he was last seen, the release said.

It was a challenging location, the release noted, and emergency workers called in the Lane County Search and Rescue Dive Team to assist.

Just after midnight, divers were able to pull Davis from the river, the release said.

The sheriff’s office said the incident is being investigated as a drowning.

It was at least the third drowning this weekend, and the second to involve a teenager. A teen drowned near Meldrum Bar Park in Gladstone on Saturday after falling off a jet ski, authorities said. And on Sunday, the city of St. Helens announced there was a search-and-rescue effort for the city administrator after he fell off a dock into the Columbia River on Saturday.
