A teenage driver caught going 176 mph on Interstate 5 south of Portland has been slapped with a $1,100 fine and a license suspension after spending the night in jail, authorities said Wednesday.

Washington County sheriff’s deputies clocked Milo Schneider, 19, of Tualatin driving nearly triple the speed limit on southbound I-5 just after midnight Wednesday, Sgt. Danny DiPietro said.

“In my 15-year career, I’ve never seen a speed this high anywhere,” DiPietro said, describing the leadfoot behavior as extremely unsafe.

“When you’re going at that speed, you’re going to hit something and someone’s going to die,” he said.

DiPietro said Schneider was booked into the county jail on one count of reckless driving and has since been released. Anyone caught speeding above 100 mph faces an automatic $1,100 fine and a six-month suspension of their license, DiPietro said.

In this case, a patrol deputy broadcast a description of a blue 2016 BMW M3 after measuring the speed of the sedan on I-5 near Oregon 217, according to the sheriff’s office. Another deputy spotted the sedan leave the interstate at Nyberg Street, then both deputies “pinned” the sports car while it was stopped at the off-ramp to prevent the driver from leaving.

“You might be able to outrun our cars, but you’re never going to outrun our radios,” DiPietro said.

Schneider told deputies he had pushed the speedometer up to 183 mph at one point during the drive, according to the sheriff’s office.

The teenager did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
