A Multnomah County grand jury has indicted a 56-year-old woman seven months after her dog allegedly killed a 6-year-old boy inside a garage in Northeast Portland.

Koko Moe Miller is accused of four felonies: criminally negligent homicide, maintaining a dangerous dog and two counts of criminal mistreatment in the first degree, court records show. The grand jury returned the indictment Monday, and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.

Portland police officers arrived at the single-family home near Northeast 113th Avenue and Schuyler Street a little before 8 a.m. Dec. 5 and were greeted at the front door by a woman covered in blood, police officials said.

Miller owns the home and told police she took the boy to school every morning after his grandmother dropped him off. Portland police spokesperson Mike Benner said she kept her two dogs in the garage attached to the home.

Benner said the woman told police the boy opened the door to the garage, and one of the dogs attacked him. The second dog was also involved in the attack but wasn’t “the primary aggressor,” Benner said.

The woman tried pulling the dog off the boy and grabbed a gun, but didn’t shoot, Benner said.

Court records do not describe in detail what happened in the attack. Miller owned at least two dogs that were both unlicensed at the time of the attack, according to Multnomah County Animal Services. Both dogs — described as Great Dane-mastiff mixes — were then euthanized.

Miller’s attorney, Cary R. Cadonau, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
