With dozens of locals still coming out despite overcast skies, Toledo residents participated in the 10th annual Esther Borte Memorial Walk in the Park last Saturday to raise money for park maintenance and repairs, and honor Esther Borte.
According to Toledo Parks Board Chair Elizabeth Buell, the event had 24 sponsors and raised a total of $2,650.48 for work where the walk was held — the Kemp Olson Memorial Park and RV Campground.
“However, we are waiting on money from Day in the Park and a donation from the church that Esther Borte went to when she was alive,” Buell said in an email to The Chronicle.
During her life, Toledo resident Esther Borte quilted and donated many of her creations for fundraising efforts to improve Kemp Olson Park.
The annual walks are held in her honor to continue her efforts following her death in 2016 and this year's included a quilt Borte sowed together back in 2006.
Along with raffles for gift certificates to local businesses, many hand crafted quilts were also raffled off to raise money, including the one Borte made herself.
