Pacific Lutheran University has named Lorena Slaughter, a student at A.G. West Black Hills High School, a President’s Scholar, earning her a scholarship of $34,000 per year.

Slaughter is one of 133 President’s Scholars who were selected from a pool of over 400 applicants, Pacific Lutheran University said in a news release.

“All applicants met a rigorous standard of academic excellence; however, students awarded this scholarship displayed exemplary qualities in leadership, service, and academics, while also displaying the potential to enrich our campus community in the classroom and beyond,” Pacific Lutheran University stated in the release.

This year’s President’s Scholars have a cumulative average weighted GPA of 4.05.

These top students have an open invitation to interview for the next tiers of Pacific Lutheran University  scholarships — the $40,000 per year Harstad Scholarship and full-tuition Regents’ Scholarship — at the end of the month.
