The Pe Ell girls basketball team couldn’t break out of its offensive slump to start the season, but the Trojans did just enough to defeat Willapa Valley 41-31 on the road Tuesday night.
The Trojans shot just 16.4% from the field in the win, one that snapped a three-game skid. Pe Ell led by 10 at halftime and maintained its lead for the remainder of the contest.
“Although we came out with the win, there are a lot of little things that as a team we need to clean up. We had way too many missed layups and rebounds, as well as a lack of communication at times on defense,” Pe Ell head coach Kelsey Lennox said.
Peyton Zock put up a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and she blocked four shots and nabbed four steals.
Ava King scored eight of her 10 points in the second half and grabbed a pair of rebounds. Despite shooting 0 for 10 from the field, Maisy King pulled down nine rebounds and came up with two deflections and a steal. Madi Engel tallied seven points, five rebounds and four assists.
Pe Ell got a lift from its shooters at the charity stripe, with the Trojans knocking down 18 of 28 free throws.
Pe Ell (2-3) will host Adna Thursday night in its first home game since Dec. 4.
