A woman died after suffering a medical event then being struck by a vehicle in downtown Olympia Wednesday morning, according to Olympia police.

The incident occurred at around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Fourth Avenue East and Plum Street, about a block away from Olympia City Hall, Lt. Paul Lower said.

Police closed the intersection soon after the incident and were still investigating as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, Lower said. He described the pedestrian as a "middle-aged woman" and said detectives were still working to identify her.

So far, Lower said police believe the woman suffered "some sort of large medical event" that caused her to drop to the ground and remain there immobile. A few moments later, he said a driver struck the woman with their vehicle.

The driver remained at the scene and no one else was involved in the incident, Lower said. Based on a preliminary investigation, he said police do not suspect this to be a criminal matter. He called it a "very sad situation."
