Pirates hand Tigers first league loss

The Adna girls soccer team came away with a league-altering win on Monday night, when the Pirates topped Napavine 2-1 to hand the Tigers their first league loss of the season.

It was the Pirates fifth game in eight days, but Adna coach Patrick Richardson said that his team showed no signs of fatigue.

“The girls were fired up,” Richardson said. “And just pushed themselves to play one of their best games of the season.”

Adna opened the scoring in the 26th minute, when Bailey Naillon made a run up the sideline, cut towards the box, and found Sophie Hagseth, who sank the shot to make it 1-0.

That scoreline held at the half, and Richardson said that the Pirates knew they would need to avoid a letdown coming out of the break.

In the 64th minute, Naillon made another run up the side, but this time, she took the shot.

The ball ricocheted off the post, but Haley Roundtree was there to put it home and double the lead.

The Tigers were able to get on the board in the 78th minute on an impressive shot from outside the box from Hayden Kaut, but an equalizer never came.

Onalaska and Toledo are now the last two C2BL teams without a loss in league play.

“I am so proud of how they played tonight,” Richardson said. “The girls can see their potential, and if they can play like tonight, they can beat anyone we’ve had on our schedule. Just a great team effort all around.”

Adna (5-8-2, 5-2 C2BL) will hit the road on Wednesday to face Toutle Lake, while Napavine (6-4-2, 3-1-1 C2BL) will host Onalaska at the same time.
