Police shot a man to death early Monday morning in Vancouver after the man pulled a gun on them, police reported.
A police officer was driving on Northeast Andresen Road at around 12:51 a.m. when several people flagged him down, Vancouver police said. They reported a man pointing a gun at them as he walked down the road, according to the police statement.
Additional officers arrived, and police found the man near the 2400 block of Northeast Andresen Road. He refused police commands to stop, and an officer sent a police dog toward him, police reported.
The man pointed a gun at the officers, and the four officers shot at him, according to the police statement. During the shooting, the police dog was shot in the tail.
The man was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
The police dog underwent surgery on its tail, but the four officers were not injured, police reported. The officers — who have not been publicly identified — are on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure.
This is the second police shooting in Vancouver in just over a week.
On June 8, Vancouver police fatally shot a man who pointed what appeared to be a gun at a police officer.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office will lead an independent investigation into Monday’s shooting. Body-cam and in-car footage will be reviewed and released later, police reported.
