Police in Thurston County Looking for Animal Cruelty Suspect After Dog Found Hacked to Death

Olympia police are looking for a suspect after a dog was found hacked to death Sunday afternoon in the 2300 block of State Avenue Northeast.

Police believe a large sword or machete was used to kill the dog, which police described as a "husky mix," Police Lt. Paul Lower said Tuesday.

About 4 p.m., police were dispatched to the address after a neighbor called 911 to report that she could hear a dog "screaming."

The neighbor looked into the backyard of the nearby residence and could see that the dog was severely injured. Police arrived and found the dog dead.

While police were still on the scene, the dog owner returned home, explaining to police that she had put her dog in the backyard so that she could go shopping.

Police do not have a suspect description, but they do know an older tan and brown Chevrolet truck was seen leaving an alley near the residence about the time of the 911 call.

The suspect, if arrested, could face animal cruelty and malicious mischief charges, as well as burglary for entering the backyard of the residence, Lower said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Olympia police at 360-753-8300.
