Portland man loses half of his foot after salon pedicure, sues for $900K

A 40-year-old Portland man says he lost half of his foot after it became infected from unsterilized tools used during a pedicure he received at a local nail salon.

Nathan Fields has filed a $913,000 lawsuit against Eden Salon & Spa, claiming that a nail technician “severely cut” his big toe during the March 2025 pedicure and that ultimately led to two amputations that carved away all of his toes and much of his foot.

Fields’ attorney, Damian Idiart, said Fields has diabetes but that he reasonably could have expected to live the rest of his life with his foot intact had it not been for the severe cut or other major injury.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reached out to the salon for comment but didn’t hear back. The salon is located next to Clackamas Town Center in the Happy Valley area.

Idiart said this was Fields’ first pedicure at the salon, and Fields informed the technician that he had had diabetes since he was 17. The suit says that after the technician cut him, the cut didn’t heal and there were signs of infection and inflammation. He sought medical treatment, but doctors first had to remove his big toe and later approximately half of his foot at the arch, according to Idiart.

The suit claims that the salon “knew or should have known of the risk of harm posed to a diabetic customer like (Fields) by cutting his toe and by not maintaining clean pedicure implements and tools.”

Idiart said Fields used to work as a mover, but he no longer is physically able to.

Idiart described Fields as athletic and a basketball player, but now he “can’t run, jump or walk well” and he “can’t even really drive his vehicle without difficulty.” Idiart said his client has “constant aches and cramps.”

Fields is seeking $113,000 in medical bills and $800,000 for his pain and suffering. The suit was filed last month in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
