Rainier girls varsity tracksters outperformed all other schools in the WIAA District 4 Championships at Rainier High School on April 29, placing first overall with 102 points, clinching six distinct titles in the process.
The next closest team was Kalama, which netted 91.5 points.
The boys, with four first place titles of their own, placed fourth overall at 74 points.
Junior Selena Niemi ran her heart out in distance events, taking home a whopping three district titles, one in the 800-meter race at a time of 2:35.28; one in the 1600-meter race at a time of 5:41.87, her season’s record; and one in the 3200-meter race at a time of 13:22.66.
Junior Isabella Holmes threw the discus for all she was worth, earning first in the event, with a distance of 127-08, a personal record.
In the pole vault, it was senior Alia Garner’s time to shine, as she took home first with a height of 9 feet even.
And not to be outdone, junior Kaeley Schultz placed four times. She was the district champion in javelin, with a distance of 101-6.5; she took second in both the 100 meter and 300-meter hurdle events with times of 16.46, and 49.76, respectively, both personal records; and she rounded out third in the high jump with a height of 4 feet and 10 inches.
Junior Jeremiah Nubbe was again king of the boys team, distantly beating all other competitors in the shot put and discus events, with distances of 51-1.5 and 192-06, respectively. In discus, there was a nearly 20-foot disparity between him and his closest competition. Nubbe also earned third in the javelin, with a distance of 144-06.
The boys also pole vaulted their way to a district title with junior Ryan Doidge’s first-place outing of 12-06. Notably, senior Gabriel Price, also of Rainier, took second in the event, with a height of 11 feet even, a personal record.
And finally, Thomas Ronne was the team’s final hero, becoming the district champion in the triple jump event with a distance of 40-7.75, a personal record.
