Relay for Life of Lewis County aiming to ‘derail’ cancer with free event Saturday

Relay for Life of Lewis County is back with its annual free event at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Attendees can enjoy food, live music from Bonzo Balm and Chris Guenther, fireworks, a silent auction, a baking auction, activities for kids and the lighting of luminarias in the evening.

Relay for Life has raised approximately $33,000 since September, as of Friday, with a goal of $50,000 for the American Cancer Society. While admission to Saturday’s event is free, donations are encouraged.

“People have been pretty generous. We just recently had a bake sale that raised over $400 in just two lunches, and all of the baked goods were from staff and students and parents,” Ruby Stanton, W.F. West High School student and Relay for Life of Lewis County youth advocate, said.

This year’s theme will be “40 years of derailing cancer,” as Relay for Life is celebrating 40 years. Stanton said the event will have more of a train theme, as compared to a car theme like last year.

This year’s event will also be held in a different area of the fairgrounds.

“We’re usually by the saloon stage instead of the grandstand. But this year, we’ll be at the grandstand and by the 4-H building, which is going to be really cool,” Stanton said. “We get the whole 4-H building to put up the survivor lounge, and we have access to an oven and a refrigerator.”

Stanton said Relay for Life of Lewis County has between 17 to 20 teams of walkers signed up to walk the track during the event, as of Friday. To join or start a team, or to learn more about the event, visit https://tinyurl.com/yc2d8dre.
