The right song doesn’t just find your ears — it finds your life.
Every life has a soundtrack — some songs you hear, and some you carry with you.
You know the kind I’m talking about. A melody comes on, and suddenly you’re not where you are anymore. You’re somewhere else … somewhere back. A kitchen table. A long drive. A dance floor. A hospital room. A quiet evening when the world slowed down just enough for you to notice what mattered.
Music has a way of doing that. It reaches past all the noise and finds the part of us that remembers.
I’ve always believed that songs are more than entertainment. They’re markers. They hold pieces of our story — moments we might not be able to put into words, but somehow a song can say it for us. They remind us who we were, who we are, and sometimes … who we still hope to be.
There are songs that make us brave. Songs that helped us keep going when things got hard. Songs that carried us through loss, through uncertainty, through those seasons where we weren’t sure how the story was going to turn out.
And then there are the songs that remind us of the people we love.
Not long ago, I had an experience that brought all of this into focus for me. I had a custom song created for my wife, Connie, through a company called Prayer Song. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I knew what I felt — and I hoped somehow it could be captured.
When I heard the finished song for the first time, it stopped me. The song brought tears to our eyes.
Because it wasn’t just music.
It was memory. It was gratitude. It was years of shared life — wrapped into a few minutes of melody and words. It reminded me of everything we’ve walked through together … the simple days, the hard days, the laughter, the quiet moments that no one else ever sees.
It said things that are hard to say out loud sometimes.
And that’s what music does at its best. It gives voice to what we feel but don’t always know how to express. It reaches into those places in us that are deeply human — love, hope, loss, joy — and brings them forward in a way that feels honest.
We don’t always realize it, but we build our lives around these moments. A song at a wedding. A song on the radio during a long drive. A song that plays at just the right time when we need it most.
Over time, they become part of us.
Some songs fade. Others stay.
The ones that stay are the ones tied to something real. A person. A promise. A season of life that shaped us. Those are the songs that don’t just play in the background — they live in us.
And every once in a while, we’re given the chance to hear our own story reflected back in a way that reminds us just how meaningful it all is.
I think we need more of that.
More moments where we slow down long enough to recognize what we’ve been given. More reminders that the ordinary days — the ones that don’t seem like much at the time — are often the ones that matter most.
Because one day, those are the days we’ll remember.
And maybe — if we’re fortunate — there will be a song that carries them for us.
Porch Blessing:
Some songs don’t just play — they stay. Hold onto the ones that remind you of who you love and the life you’ve lived together. Those are the melodies that matter.
