Toledo couldn’t quite pull it off but the Riverhawks went toe-to-toe with 2B Pacific League champion Ilwaco in a 60-56 defeat in the opening round of the 2B District 4 boys tournament on Saturday.

The Riverhawks, Central 2B League’s No. 8 seed, battled the 2B Pacific League champion Fishermen to a 41-41 tie entering the fourth quarter.

But the Fishermen finally pulled away in the fourth quarter as Jaden Turner scored 14 of his game-high 31 points in the final frame to put the Riverhawks away.

“We played well and played hard, they just pulled away in the fourth quarter,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said.

Jake Cournyer led Toledo with 21 points and three steals, which included three 3-pointers, and Carson Olmstead added 11 points and five rebounds while Rogan Stanley also scored 11 points and hauled in six boards.

“After our game against Napavine, I was disappointed in our performance,” Fallon said. “We were a totally different team tonight. Proud of our effort. If we play like that, we have a chance of nabbing one of the five state bids.”

Toledo next faces the loser of Adna/North Beach at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Black Hills High School in a loser-out match.
