Rochester tops Black Hills in physical affair

The Rochester girl’s soccer team opened league play with a 2-0 win over Black Hills on Tuesday.

The game was even through the first 20 minutes, with both teams playing physically out of the gate.

In the 25th minute, Emily Beasley gave the Warriors (2-1, 1-0 2A EvCo) the lead with a 35-yard shot that just cleared the keeper’s hands.

The Wolves (0-3-1, 0-1 2A EvCo) came out with a different level of intensity in the second half, but they couldn’t find the equalizer. Lizzy Hoover doubled Rochester’s lead in the 68th minute, and that scoreline held until the final whistle.

Rochester coach Matt Ashton said that he couldn’t express how pleased he was with the Warriors play and the final result. It’s the first time that they have beaten Black Hills since the Warriors moved up to 2A in 2016.

“They did not back down and held strong.” Ashton said, commending his team before also making sure to praise keeper Alondra Uribe, who “had one of her best outings.”

Both the Warriors and Wolves will be back on the pitch on Thursday. Rochester heads to Tiger Stadium to face Centralia while Black Hills will look to snap its three-game losing streak at home against Tumwater. Both games will kickoff at 7 p.m.
