Sandbag Locations Open Ahead of Predicted Flooding

With moderate to severe flooding in the forecast later this week, sandbagging locations have opened in Chehalis.

The City of Chehalis on Wednesday opened its self-serve sandbagging station at 25 SW Circle Ave. following reports of likely flooding along the Newaukum and Chehalis rivers on Friday.

The station is located behind Security State Bank in the gravel parking lot, according to a news release from the city’s public works department. Sandbags are limited, so residents and businesses are encouraged to bring their own.

Lewis County Emergency Management on Wednesday also opened its sandbag station, located at 19 SW Cascade Ave., near the corner of Main Street and Cascade Avenue.

Shovels, bags and information on how to stuff and stack them are available on-site.

“If severe weather conditions persist and other rivers exceed their banks, additional sandbag locations throughout the county may be opened as needed,” read a news release from Emergency Management.

The City of Centralia opened its sandbagging station, located on the empty lot kitty corner to city hall, Thursday morning.
