Several injured in serious collision in rural Thurston County Sunday, sheriff says

Several people suffered injuries in a "serious head-on/t-bone" collision in rural Thurston County on Sunday, according to Sheriff Derek Sanders.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Rainier Road Southeast and Spurgeon Creek Road, nearly 6 miles north of Rainier.

Sanders shared details about the incident in a Facebook post.

Sanders and Nisqually Tribal Police "stumbled upon" the scene while he was on his way home, he said. The causing driver allegedly blew past a stop sign and crashed into a white Dodge pickup truck driving down Rainier Road, he said.

"The causing driver and their passengers sustained head injuries, the driver of the pickup truck did not report any immediate injuries," Sanders said. "Though I'm sure he'll be sore tomorrow."

Sanders' post does not detail how many people were hurt, whether any of them were hospitalized or whether any charges are pending for the causing driver. A photo of the scene shared by Sanders showed an ambulance parked by the two damaged vehicles.

The Olympian has asked the Sheriff's Office for more details.

The crash reportedly resulted in an oil spill over the wet road. Sanders warned drivers to expect traffic delays as tow trucks removed the cars and spill response crews cleaned up the scene.
