Sirens: Driver hits pedestrian, leaves scene; pit bulls attack cat; student found with marijuana smoking device

LEWIS COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT

Preliminary appearances

• Vivian L. Whitwam, 66, Toledo, made an out-of-custody preliminary appearance June 2 for one count of third-degree assault following an alleged incident at Providence Centralia Hospital. An arraignment was scheduled for June 18.

CENTRALIA POLICE DEPARTMENT

Arrests

• Jason J. Benka, 41, Rochester, was arrested and booked into the Chehalis Tribal Jail for alleged possession of methamphetamine and first-degree criminal trespass in the 900 block of Harrison Avenue at about 9:35 a.m. June 1. Police reportedly contacted Benka and told him he was trespassed from a business after he allegedly threw rocks in the parking lot. Approximately 10 minutes later, according to police, Benka returned and was arrested. Upon a search incident to arrest, police allegedly found a used smoking device with suspected methamphetamine residue.

• Adrian Rojas, 23, Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged fourth-degree assault (domestic violence) in the 600 block of H Street at about 10:33 p.m. June 2.

Criminal trespass

• Trevor Durham, 34, Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged second-degree criminal trespass in the 600 block of South Tower Avenue at about 8:56 p.m. June 1.

• Michael Bostwick, 52, Centralia, was issued a criminal citation for alleged second-degree criminal trespass and possession of a controlled substance (suspected methamphetamine) in the 200 block of East Chestnut Street at about 1:08 a.m. June 2.

• Four individuals were reportedly trespassed from each other’s property after a property-line dispute in the 700 block of South Pearl Street at about 8:29 a.m. June 2.

• Two transient males were trespassed from a local business in the 1200 block of Harrison Avenue at about 8:49 a.m. June 2 after they were found setting up a makeshift camp on the property.

• A transient male was trespassed from a local business in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue at about 3:11 p.m. June 2 after multiple customers reported that he’d made threats toward them.

• John Lininger, 53, Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged second-degree criminal trespass in the 100 block of East Chestnut Street at about 8:09 p.m. June 2.

• A transient male was trespassed from a property in the 200 block of East Cherry Street at about 10:01 p.m. June 2.

Accidents

• A two-vehicle collision with minor injuries was reported near the corner of Harrison Avenue and West Main Street at about 3:23 p.m. June 1.

• A two-vehicle collision was reported near the corner of Harrison Avenue and View Avenue at about 4:03 p.m. June 1.

• A single-vehicle accident was reported near the corner of Cooks Hill Road and Mellen Street at about 5:34 a.m. June 2.

• A semi-truck reportedly drove through low-hanging cable wires when leaving a local business in the 1300 block of Harrison Avenue at about 6:24 a.m. June 2. Police said multiple wires were torn from the power poles. Nearby roads were closed for about one hour for public safety.



Marijuana violation

• A juvenile was referred to the Lewis County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office for alleged possession of a controlled substance in the 900 block of Johnson Road at about 11:31 a.m. June 1. The juvenile was allegedly found with a marijuana smoking device while at school.

Hit-and-run

• Lacey Cunningham, 38, Tumwater, was referred to Lewis County Superior Court for felony hit-and-run in the 1000 block of Belmont Avenue at about 6:31 p.m. June 1 after allegedly striking a pedestrian in the roadway and leaving the scene prior to contact with law enforcement. The collision reportedly injured the pedestrian.

• A hit-and-run collision was investigated in the 500 block of South Tower Avenue at about 3:05 p.m. June 2 after a witness observed a large truck strike a city light pole and continue on.

Theft

• An overnight bicycle theft was reported in the 2800 block of Russell Road at about 1 p.m. June 1. There was no suspect information at the time.

Vicious dog

• Two loose pit bulls reportedly attacked a cat causing significant injuries in the 2600 block of Seward Avenue at about 9:56 a.m. June 1. The case is under investigation.

CHEHALIS POLICE DEPARTMENT

Arrests

• Uriah Osborne was booked into the Lewis County Jail on a Department of Corrections warrant and referred for alleged possession of drug paraphernalia in the 300 block of Southwest Chehalis Avenue at about 4:06 p.m. May 29.

Theft

• Two individuals were referred for charges for allegedly stealing political signatures from a table in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at about 1:09 p.m. June 1.

JAIL STATISTICS

• As of June 3, the Lewis County Jail had a total facility population of 157 inmates, including 144 in the general population and 13 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of the general population inmates, 124 were reported male and 20 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 11 were reported male and two were reported female.

• As of June 3, the Chehalis Tribal Jail had a total jail population of 15 inmates. Of those, five were from Centralia, one was from Chehalis and six were from the Department of Corrections. Additionally, there was one each from the Quileute Nation, the Shoalwater Bay Tribe and the Skokomish Tribe.
