Sirens: Vehicle windows smashed, tires punctured; Woman allows dog to defecate in store; Smoking fentanyl on the sidewalk; 'Suspicious death'

CENTRALIA POLICE DEPARTMENT 

Malicious mischief 

• Just after 11:25 a.m. on Aug. 18, officers responded to a report of possible vandalism in the 100 block of North Diamond Street involving newly discovered damage to a residential window believed to be a bullet hole. Officers determined the hole came from a BB gun that originated from a neighbor’s yard. 

• Vandalism to two vehicles in the 1100 block of South Pearl Street was reported just before 10:20 a.m. on Aug. 20. Both vehicles reportedly had several windows smashed in and the tires punctured. The case is under investigation. 

 

Vehicle accidents 

• A vehicle-versus-cyclist collision was reported at the intersection of Mellen and Ellsbury streets just after 3:55 p.m. on Aug. 18. The cyclist left the scene before officers arrived. 

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported on private property in the 1300 block of Lum Road at 2:10 p.m. on Aug. 19. 

• A two-vehicle collision with possible injuries was reported at the intersection of East Summa Street and Kresky Avenue at 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 19. 

 

Theft 

• A woman reportedly stole items from a grocery store in the 500 block of South Tower Avenue just after 5:10 p.m. on Aug. 18. Security video footage revealed the suspect had a dog in the store, “who she allowed to defecate in the aisle before stealing multiple refreshments,” according to the Centralia Police Department. The case is under investigation. 

• A juvenile reportedly stole mail from the 1200 block of South Tower Avenue at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 18. The mail was returned to its owner, and the juvenile was given a warning. 

• An attempted theft was reported at a business in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Aug. 19. When confronted by store employees, the male suspect began yelling at employees and left without the stolen property. Management at the store asked officers to trespass the suspect if located, but officers were unable to locate the suspect. 

• Officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle with no license plates behind the outlet stores in the 100 block of West High Street at 3:25 p.m. on Aug. 19. Officers located the vehicle’s owner, a 43-year-old Medford, Oregon resident, and found she had stolen property from the outlet store on her person. She was cited for third-degree theft. 

 

Criminal trespass 

• A woman was reportedly refusing to leave a residence in the 2800 block of Keats Drive at approximately 1 a.m. on Aug. 19. The woman left the area as officers were responding. 

• Officers were dispatched to a report of a disorderly male who was “screaming and cursing” at the resident of a house in the 1300 block of Harrison Avenue just before 11:25 p.m. on Aug. 19. The resident asked officers to trespass the male from their property due to past threats the male had made. The male was trespassed from the property. 

 

Drug violations 

• Officers contacted a homeless woman who was passed out in her vehicle in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue just after 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 19. The woman reportedly admitted to drug use and consented to officers searching her vehicle. The search yielded drug paraphernalia. Officers referred the woman to the Recovery Navigator Program “for her substance addiction,” according to the Centralia Police Department. 

• A homeless man from Chehalis was reportedly seen smoking fentanyl on the sidewalk in the 200 block of North Railroad Avenue just before 10:50 p.m. on Aug. 20. The male was issued a citation and officers seized the drugs. The male was referred to the Recovery Navigator Program. 

 

Disorderly conduct 

• Just before 2:05 p.m. on Aug. 19, an officer responded to a report of a male cutting wood behind a residential property in the 1500 block of Sunset Way and yelling at the homeowner when confronted. The officer was unable to locate the suspect. 

• A male was reportedly “throwing a knife into a tree” at a park in the 100 block of South Pearl Street just before 4:40 p.m. on Aug. 19. 



 

Burglary 

• Just after 8:20 a.m. on Aug. 20, a pedestrian notified police that the window to a business in the 1200 block of Lum Road had been smashed in and it appeared someone had burglarized the business. Officers confirmed the business was burglarized at an unknown time overnight. The case is under investigation. 

• A burglary-in-progress was reported at a retail store in the 1900 block of Johnson Road just before 1:10 a.m. on Aug. 21. The suspects left before officers arrived at the scene. The case is under investigation. 

 

Camping 

• Homeless people were reportedly setting up camp in the parking lot of a train station in the 200 block of North Railroad Avenue just after 8:55 a.m. on Aug. 20. Officers contacted the subjects and determined they were not camping. 

 

Death investigation 

• A “suspicious death” reported in the 900 block of South Scheuber Road just before 11:25 a.m. on Aug. 20 is under investigation. 

 

Dispute 

• A physical dispute between two males at a shelter in the 100 block of North Gold Street was reported just before 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. One of the involved parties left the scene before officers arrived, and the other party did not want to report an incident, according to the Centralia Police Department. 

 

Assault 

• A fourth-degree assault and theft of a phone was reported in the 200 block of North Railroad Avenue at 1 a.m. on Aug. 21. The case is under investigation. 

 

Recovered vehicle 

• An abandoned vehicle was reported in the 600 block of South King Street just before 8:35 p.m. on Aug. 20. Officers found the vehicle had been stolen from a Lewis County resident, and the vehicle was returned to its owner. 

 

Illegal burn 

• An illegal fire was reported in a homeless camp in the 1600 block of West Reynolds Avenue just after 7:10 a.m. on Aug. 21. Officers responded and located the fire but could not locate the responsible party. The fire was extinguished. 

 

LEWIS COUNTY JAIL STATISTICS

As of Monday morning, the Lewis County Jail had a total system population of 157 inmates, including 143 in the general population and 14 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of general population inmates, 108 were reported male and 35 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 12 were reported male and two were reported female.
