The Winlock girls basketball team couldn’t get past a slow start Monday at home, falling 52-33 in a non-league matchup to 1A Castle Rock.

The good news for the Cardinals came in the second half, when they fought the Rockets to a near standstill. The bad news came in the first, when Castle Rock dropped 20 points in the second quarter and took a 30-13 lead into halftime.

“I saw some good things at the end of the game, with some growing confidence in some of our players,” Winlock coach Dracy McCoy said. :We closed the gap at this time, if we had made some free throws we would have been right in the game.”

Kindyl Kelly led the Cardinals with 17 points. Adriana Garcia had four. Kiya Peppers, who got into foul trouble early, finished with four, as the Rockets won the battle in the interior.

Winlock (1-1) will host Morton-White Pass on Wednesday.
