Adna High School trap shooter Leslie Gonia accomplished her goal of her first perfect round en route to a 13th-place finish at the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca, Nevada.
Gonia, who recently completed her sophomore year, shot down all 25 clay pigeons in a round July 1, and she finished as the top shooter from Washington state with 82 points in the event. Overall, she knocked down 82 out of 100 targets.
The 16-year-old had previously knocked down 24 of 25 targets on multiple occasions this season but now has a perfect round on her résume. The winning shooter, Gavyn Harvey of Utah, missed all but one of 100 targets throughout the event.
To qualify for the Silver State International Rodeo, Gonia finished third in the state finals last month.
Hawkins gets third call-up to Triple-A
Former W.F. West star Dakota Hawkins has been going up-and-down in the New York Mets farm system since May and is once again a step away from the big leagues.
The right-hander was sent back up to the Syracuse Mets, the Triple-A affiliate, on Saturday for the third time in two months from the Brooklyn Cyclones, the High-A affiliate. Hawkins was also called up to Syracuse on May 2 and June 21.
It’s been a transition year for the 25-year old. After starting 11 games a season ago, Hawkins has primarily been a bullpen arm this summer. He’s posted an earned run average of 2.31, a WHIP of 1.17, and opponents are only hitting .228 against him.
Hawkins threw three innings on Saturday and struck out three.
Third annual Sally Strong event set for Saturday
For the third straight summer, members of the Tumwater community will come together for the Sally Strong event in dedication to Sally Otton. It is once again put on by the 4 the Love Foundation and proceeds also will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Sally Otton passed away in 2022 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. This year’s event, taking place at Summit Lake in Olympia once again, will begin at 9 a.m. with a triathlon and a cornhole tournament at noon.
There will also be a silent auction that starts at 10 a.m. as well as food trucks that open at 11 a.m.
