A new coach and some new transfers allowed Puyallup to enact some revenge one year in the making by dispatching 2A Tumwater 25-19 at Sparks Stadium on Friday night.
It was last fall where the Thunderbirds whipped up the Vikings to the tune of a 50-point win. This meeting in Week 1 was much different. Puyallup grabbed a 22-7 lead at the half, only for Tumwater to respond in the second half.
A touchdown in the third and fourth quarters made it a one possession game, but the margin proved too much, too late. Blake Heryford, Peyton Davis and Brett Heryford each found the end zone. Tyler Briscoe led the contingent with 74 yards on the ground.
“I was really pleased with the way our kids were able to compete over the full four quarters. We had a bunch of players thrust into new roles this season, and it took us a little while to adjust to the speed and size and physicality of the opponent,” Tumwater head coach Willy Garrow said. “I felt like our kids and our coaches did a great job at halftime making adjustments and putting us into positions to succeed in the second half and have a chance to win.”
The T-Birds remain on the road in Week 2, heading to Bainbridge.
