T-Birds surge late to beat CPC

The Tumwater girls basketball team had another quiet night on offense, but got what it needed at just the right time to come away with a non-league win over Cedar Park Christian on Thursday, 43-35.

With the Thunderbirds (7-1, 4-0 2A EvCo) down 35-34 with under two minutes left on the clock, Regan Brewer took a charge, then went down the other way on the ensuing possession and scored to give the guests a one-point lead. On the very next possession, her sister, Reece Brewer, came away with a steal and the ball got ahead to Morgan Simmons for a transition layup.

The T-Birds kept the defense up, and hit five more free throws in the final 36 seconds to pull away for the win.

Regan Brewer finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead Tumwater in just about every category. Simmons, Rhylee Beebe and Sydney Sumrok all had six points, with Simmons bringing down eight boards.

Tumwater will get two more non-league road tests to end 2023, playing at Bellarmine next Thursday before heading to Napavine on Dec. 30.
