Teens accused of stealing car, shooting at Seattle police; four arrested

Four teenagers were arrested Saturday night after eluding police and shooting at an officer on Interstate 5, while two others evaded capture, according to police.

The officer was uninjured, and police did not return fire.

One of the teens was driving erratically in a stolen Dodge Durango SUV on Aurora Avenue North around 9 p.m. when Community Response Group officers tried to stop the vehicle during a proactive patrol in North Seattle, according to police. The driver fled. Officers decided not to pursue, police said.

Officers later found the Durango parked in South Seattle. The driver fled again as officers approached the car, police said. An occupant in the SUV fired rounds at an officer while driving south on I-5.

“A witness vehicle was struck, and bullet fragments were left in the witness’s lap,” the police report said.

Officers followed the SUV south on I-5 into Tukwila before ending the pursuit at South 188th Street and Military Road South using a Precision Immobilization Technique maneuver, police said.

Three teenage girls and a 16-year-old boy were taken into custody. Seattle police Detective Eric Muñoz said it was unclear which teen was driving.

The roles of each suspect in custody and outstanding suspects are under investigation, Muñoz said in a text message.

Police recovered two handguns — one near the vehicle and another from the 16-year-old boy. Two other boys fled the scene and evaded police.

Police booked the four teen suspects into juvenile detention at the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children & Family Justice Center.

The charges included two counts of first-degree assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm and eluding a police vehicle.

Police were seeking tips about the case. Anyone with information can call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000.
