Tenino beats Rochester in Scatter Creek Showdown renewal

Posted

The boys basketball edition of the Scatter Creek Showdown returned on Wednesday, when Tenino defeated Rochester 63-43.

“It was fun getting the Scatter Creek rivalry back,” Tenino coach Ryan Robertson said. “It was a fun environment.”

The Beavers had a five-point lead after one, and they pushed it to 14 in the second by holding Rochester to just five points in the frame.

“It seems like every game we always have that one quarter where it seems like we just struggle to put the ball in the hoop,” Rochester coach Caleb Sells said. “We had to kind of scramble and take some risks in the second half to try and get things going.”

The Rochester offense played better in the second half, scoring 28 points, but the Tenino offense also got going.

The Beavers scored 34 points over the final two frames, including an eight-point fourth from Jack Burkhardt.

Burkhardt ended the night with 12 points and was one of four Beavers to finish in double-figures. Jaxson Gore hit five threes and scored a game-high 15, Austin Gonia added 13, and Will Feltus also finished with 12. Burkhardt also got a double-double by coming down with 15 rebounds.

“We’re starting to play together,” Robertson said. “We did a nice job handling the pressure and Jack did a nice job finishing in transition.”

Sells knew the Warriors would have their hands full against a Tenino team that has now won three straight, and he told his team that the margin for error would be slim.

“The way that team is playing right now; You make a mistake and give them a crease, they’re gonna take it,” Sells said. “Sometimes, we’d make a good play, and their athleticism would make up for things.”

Colton Weiss finished with 13 points, while Kole Smith tallied 12. Emmitt Mancuso added six, and Brayden O’Connor finished with four.

“We continue to grow as a team,” Sells said. “Every game they do things that’s better than the last time … They’ve gotten better. They’re fighting, they’re competing, and I appreciate that.”

Rochester (1-13, 0-3 1A Evergreen) will return home to host Hoquiam on Friday, and Tenino (5-11, 3-1 1A Evergreen) will look for its fourth win in a row at home against Montesano on Monday.
